The Female Athlete Brain. A Story and a Science for a new Era in Women's Sports.
Be a part of the change.
When former professional football player Rianne Schorel suffered repeated head injuries, she discovered that female athletes had largely been left out of brain health research and recovery protocols.
The Female Athlete Brain combines personal experience, science and practical solutions to challenge the system and advocate for change.
Featuring a foreword by Louis van Gaal. With a quote ‘Rianne shows that training the brain is just as important as training the body.’”
Official publication: 11 November 2025.
The story behind Move The Brain
Founded by twin sisters Rianne and Nanja Schorel, Move The Brain brings together more than 15 years of experience in brain health, recovery and neurotechnology.
After helping hundreds of individuals through personalized brain recovery programs, they realized the need for a larger movement focused specifically on female athletes.
That vision became The Female Athlete Brain.
The beginning of the female athlete brain
The Female Athlete Brain was first introduced during UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 activities in Switzerland by founder Rianne Schorel.
Invited by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Switzerland, Rianne was given the podium on 11 June 2025 to contribute to a high-level discussion on the future of women’s football. The conversation continued through a second Embassy invitation on 6 July 2025 during UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 activities surrounding the Dutch Women’s National Team.
Supported by a multidisciplinary team of athletes, researchers, health professionals, ambassadors and strategic partners, these events helped kick off the vision and international conversations that would become The Female Athlete Brain.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why Female Brain Health Matters
Female athletes are 1.5 to 2 times more likely to experience concussions
Longer recovery time
Recovery is more than just physical. It’s emotional and mental. As women, we heal differently, and that needs to be understood and respected.”
Lack of research
Only 30% of concussion studies include women, resulting in critical gaps in effective solutions.
Growing participation
The demand for gender-specific brain tools and prevention strategies is growing rapidly
The journey of recovery is not just about regaining what was lost—it’s about redefining who you are and becoming even stronger than before. As female athletes, our strength is not only in our physical performance, but in our ability to rise, to learn, and to reinvent ourselves through adversity.”
